Meet the Experts: Thomas & Simon | From Customer Requirements to Validated Custom Systems
Behind every custom solution at SCIENION stands a structured engineering process, from User Requirement Specification (URS) to acceptance tests.
In this month edition of Meet the Experts, we highlight the role of our Commercial Project Managers (CPMs) Thomas Jet & Simon McFadzean Ferguson, who translate complex customer needs into tailored, validated solutions by working at the interface between customers, manufacturing, sales, and R&D.
What is your job at SCIENION?
Thomas: I am a Commercial Project Manager at SCIENION since November 2025. Before this position, I worked for over 3 years as a Field Applications Specialist, supporting customers in their use of our products, standard or custom. In this new role, my focus is still to ensure customer satisfaction, but in a much more impactful way, from the ideation phase to the delivery of the actual product.
Simon: My main role as Commercial Project Manager is to ensure that customers’ expectations for custom solutions are fully understood and are accurately reflected in the quotations we provide our customers – with respect to pricing, estimated timeline and defined scope. My secondary role is to support the project manager from receipt of purchase order through to final delivery of the custom solution and process change requests resulting from change in scope.
Why do you like it?
Thomas: For all four years in the company, my focus has always been on our customers. In this job, we push the limits of what our systems can achieve while helping our customers reach their most ambitious objectives.
Simon: I have been at Scienion for over 25 years and during that time I have taken on multiple roles from finance, production, purchasing, customer service to project management for large custom projects. I feel that my role of CPM is the perfect combination of all my previous roles and allows me to apply all the skills and wealth of experience I have gained at Scienion to the benefit of our customers.
Which BICO/brand value best represents your work, and why?
Thomas: This job is a lot about building trust with our customers. Custom solutions are by nature complex projects, that can take years of work and investment to complete. This requires commitment, both on our side and our customers’. Such commitment can only be given by building trust at every step, from defining the requirements to the final product delivery.
Simon: To be honest, I would say that my work as CPM is a perfect combination of all four BICO values: trust, collaboration, focus, and grit. I work on custom projects that are often complex and can take many months or even years, from the first customer request to final testing and approval. Successfully delivering these projects requires close collaboration and building trust with customers and colleagues. It also takes strong focus and grit to meet customer needs and to overcome the challenges that naturally arise during long and demanding projects.
What future innovation or discovery excites you the most?
Thomas: I’m a big fan of lab automation: I could watch videos of robots moving plates all day! I had the chance to see several fascinating automation platforms during my years on the field, and integrating our cellenONE HT in such platforms is always a special moment for me. I’m particularly excited to see the breakthroughs AI will enable in this field.
Simon: I am mostly excited by the huge improvements in image analysis that AI can offer. Vision systems area core part of our technology, both in pre-dispense (target finding, fiducial recognition and cell/spheroid isolation) and post-dispense imaging. I see huge potential in using AI and machine learning to improve the image analysis we can offer with respect to sorting criteria, QC and detection of target deformities and QC data trends.
